Oncology Massage

Oncology massage is an approach to massage therapy based in both compassion and specialised massage techniques to safely nurture the body of someone during a cancer diagnosis, during medical treatment, when in remission, through palliative care with a terminal diagnosis and through survivorship.

Oncology Massage is a safe and non-invasive technique, specifically adapted for individuals of all ages and all types of cancer. While massage doesn’t treat the cancer itself, it may help reduce the side effects caused by conventional treatments and improve quality of life and wellbeing.

Some studies of people with cancer suggest that massage therapy reduced symptoms, such as pain, anxiety, depression and fatigue. (www.macmillan.org)

Why do people with cancer use massage?

As well as improving physical symptoms, some people with cancer say that having a massage:
makes them feel whole again
helps them to relax
helps them share feelings in an informal setting
makes them feel more positive about their body

What are the benefits of massage? (www.cancerresearchuk.org)

Massage for people with cancer is promoted as a natural way to help you relax and cope with:

pain
fatigue
nausea
anxiety and depression

Individuals who have had massages during cancer treatments have reported a range of positive outcomes such as improvements in:

sleep
the health of the scar tissue
quality of life
mental clarity and alertness
the range of movement.

Is massage safe for people with cancer?

Some people worry that massage could cause cancer cells to spread to other parts of their body. Research has not found any evidence of this, but massage therapists will avoid any areas affected by cancer, such as tumour sites or lymph nodes. Talk to your cancer doctor or nurse if you are worried. (www.macmillan.org.uk)

As with most massages, oncology massage will be tailored to you. We use specific oils from Defiant Beauty by Jennifer Young which have been created specifically for those going through cancer treatment. The skincare was created with the help of cancer patients and their nursing teams. We use a specific consultation form including details of the type of cancer you have (or had), your treatment history, your current treatment regime, any symptoms or side-effects you are experiencing, and any medical devices or lymph node involvement you may have.
